SO WHAT EXACTLY IS GLOBAL VILLAGE?

Global Village offers the opportunity for volunteers to team up and to take part in the “hands on” construction or renovation of houses in communities throughout more than 40 countries around the world, 16 of which are in the Asia-Pacific region.

Global Village seeks and mobilizes volunteers for a life-transforming experience, both for the volunteers and for the families whose homes they help build.

Teams of up to 25 volunteers travel to a host country to build in partnership with local families and volunteers. Global Village trips typically last five days to two weeks.

As a Global Village volunteer, you work alongside future homeowners, local volunteers and skilled construction workers. It can be hot. It can be muddy. It can be tiring. But it is always satisfying.

Everyone is welcome. Volunteers with building skills are especially welcome. You only need to know how to hold a hammer or a paintbrush. You may be asked to move blocks, lay bricks (with some tuition), dig a hole, mix cement, push a wheel barrow … or organize refreshments. There are plenty of tasks for everyone. The more volunteers, the less strain!

During a visit, you do more than work on a construction site. You learn about what poverty housing really means. You become a part of your host’s community, experiencing daily life and meeting new people.

There’s also time for recreation. You may find yourself spending a day at the beach or joining in festive celebrations or perhaps contemplating astonishing scenery with your fellow volunteers.

Every Global Village team has a leader. Some leaders recruit “open” teams, inviting individuals from many different backgrounds for join. Some prefer “closed” teams, recruiting people from a company, a church, a college, a school, and other specialized groups.
