What Is A Habitat Community Youth Group?
Community Youth Groups are youth-led and youth-run organizations of Habitat for Humanity. They are composed of diverse representation from the local community such as youth leaders from schools, churches, businesses, home-partner youth associations and other youth service organizations.
Groups work in partnership with a local affiliate in building, educating, fund-raising, community development and spearheading youth leadership development. An affiliate is an independent, locally-run, non-profit volunteer group. Each affiliate organizes fund-raising and donations of materials; house construction using volunteers and, where appropriate, paid specialist construction workers; as well as mortgage repayments.
A Community Youth Group essentially operates as the ?youth wing? of an affiliate, and a HFH affiliate staff person acts as an adviser to the group. A group is expected to work in partnership with the affiliate, following fund-raising guidelines developed by Habitat for Humanity.
Do I Get To Build Habitat Houses?
Yes. Habitat campus chapters and youth groups in the Asia-Pacific region frequently raise funds for and participate in builds within their own countries and overseas on Global Village teams.
It is quiet common for a school chapter to arrange annual builds ? under the supervision of teachers. The students raise funds for the trip and organize their itineraries beforehand and then, afterwards, share their experiences with fellow students, teachers, friends and family members. The experience often proves transformational. Many participants return determined to address the wider issue of poverty housing.
How Do I Start A Campus Chapter or Community Youth Group?
It?s easy. The first step is to round up a group of like-minded friends and get in touch with your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. They?ll advise you on what to do, help you learn about the work of Habitat for Humanity and get you get started organizing whatever events you are keen to do. Later on, you may become accredited as a chartered student or youth group and officially part of the Habitat for Humanity family
